Diversys uses three basic design levels when creating custom e-learning courseware for our clients.
There are no hard and fast rules, but choosing the appropriate design level is usually based on the following factors:
Type of course content being created
Project timelines and deadlines
Budgetary constraints
Course goals and objectives
Audience
It is important to remember that expensive, high-level design is not always the best choice.
In fact, most successful e-learning courses use a mid-level design parameter.
Level 1 - Level 1 design is used to disseminate simple information to the student.
This design level incorporates low-level multimedia and interactivity, which reduces overall production cost.
Level 1 design is best used when curriculum concepts are easy to follow and do not require situational thought.
Design parameters include:
Simple multiple choice exercises
Basic click boxes and roll-over captions
No audio narration or limited audio snippets
One assessment exercise
Level 2 - Level 2 design is the most popular as it offers highly engaging interactive and multimedia elements
at an affordable price. Design parameters include:
Situational questions based on real-world scenarios
Click boxes/rollover captions, external resources and materials
Full audio narration
1-2 animated scenarios
Multiple lesson quizzes
One final assessment
Level 3 - Building Level 3 courseware is demanding and requires a thorough knowledge of your operations.
Because of this, Level 3 courses can be significantly more expensive to develop.
A great deal of time is spent determining the goals and outcomes of the finished training course. Design parameters include:
Complex animated scenarios
Embedded video clips
Click boxes/rollover captions, external resources and materials
Full audio narration
Branched learning techniques
Situational questions based on real-world scenarios
Multiple lesson quizzes
Pre- and post-assessments
Interactive instructional games
